International deal

At last weekend’s Paris conference of the European Social Forum, our comrades at times seemed to be fighting a lone battle for working class democratic representation within the ESF. They were amongst a tiny minority who insisted the European movement needed an elected and accountable leadership.

But their stand did not go unnoticed. At least one French comrade appreciated their efforts: “Pour l’internationalisme,” he said as he walked past the CPGB stall, taking a copy of the Weekly Worker and carefully placing a €10 note on the table in exchange. Not a bad deal.

Nearer home, things are looking up in the battle not only to achieve our £450 target for December, but to make the extra £91 we need on top to end 2002 in the black. Special thanks go to comrade TH, who wrote us a cheque for £50. Thanks also to PR, KP and DC (£20 each), FG (£10) and JD (£5). Sadly the regular 7,500-plus web surfers who take the e-paper for free each week have yet to dip into their pockets.

Using my calculator, I find that our internationalist French sympathiser’s donation gives us around £6, and that the total so far is £166.

Next week’s 16-pager will be the final Weekly Worker of 2002. I would love to be able to inform you then that all those Christmas presents I am expecting have arrived, with two weeks to spare. Comrades, please post early to beat the rush. We need your help.
