Summer Offensive

Secret readers
Yet another increase in the number of our web readers sees us over the 9,000 mark this week - 9,166, to be precise. That puts our total circulation healthily over the 10,000 mark.

Amongst last week’s readers was comrade TG, who made a very generous donation of £50 using our PayPal facility. Also leaving their calling cards were comrades WR and DP, who gave us £10 and £5 respectively. Our thanks go to
all three.

Mind you, a ratio of one donation for every 3,000 visitors is not something to get too excited about. Most of our web readers are hardly partisans of the CPGB. Of course, many are members of left groups, not least the Socialist Workers Party, who read us secretly: it would be dangerous to be seen publicly with a copy of the printed version. Our job is to transform their interest into sympathy and sympathy into active engagement. That will doubtless be a slow process. But no one should be under any doubt that it has begun.
The post has not brought us too much over the last seven days. Just two cheques from PL (£15) and FK (£10). That takes our total for October to £225 towards our £500 target.
Robbie Rix

Forum must serve unity
Despite all the problems in the preparations for this year’s Europan Social Forum, the coming together of the left across Europe is of vital importance, says Tina Becker. But in order for the working class ever to be in a position to effectively challenge the Europe of the bosses, bankers and bureaucrats, our own structures must be democratic and accountable

  • Guide to the British left: Whose left at the ESF?
The British left is renowned for its fractious and sectarian nature. The European Social Forum in London will enhance that reputation enormously, writes Ian Mahoney

Left radical or “bog-standard New Labour politician”? Eddie Ford takes a look at the history and practice of the ‘red’ mayor of London

Against the European constitutional treaty
The so-called EU constitution is thoroughly undemocratic, argues Mike Macnair. The European working class needs its own agenda; European communists and revolutionary socialists need unity

An issue that cannot be ducked
The recent attacks on abortion rights by the Sunday Telegraph show that the left must start an offensive to defend and extend a woman's right to choose, writes Anne McShane - against the wishes of the Socialist Workers Party and Socialist Action

Militants rally against FBU ban
Alan Fox reports on the ban of the leftwing Grassroots FBU by the Fire Brigade Union's executive

Vapour of democracy
In his regular column, Martin Schreader keeps us abreast of the US elections

Self-determination for the Iraqi people!
The working class must win leadership of anti-imperialist struggle, writes Paul Greenaway

  • Defend Iraqi communists
The Worker-communist Party of Iraq is under attack from forces allied to the US-led occupation and its office in Muqdadyiah is threatened with closure. While we do not agree with the WCPI’s ‘even-handed’ approach to the occupation and those resisting it, we are totally opposed to this outrageous attack and are pleased to publish its statement

Sectarian pose
Phil Hamilton reviews the website of the American Socialist Workers Party

Finish the American revolution
The battle for democracy did not stop in 1783 or 1865. Indeed today, argues Jack Conrad, America urgently needs a third, democratic, revolution

Indecidable politics
