Rees comes out for Blair’s laws
Leaders of the Socialist Worker Party are galloping to the right at a breathtaking pace: John Rees supports the religious hatred laws, reports Mark Fischer

The Weekly Worker takes a closer look at the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill and explains why communists must oppose them

Fight for Marxist principle in Respect

Return to Labourism?
Graham Bash (Labour Left Briefing) reports from the Labour Party conference

Making a difference
Eva Bulling-Schröter is one of 54 newly elected German MPs from the Linkspartei (Left Party), which achieved a magnificent 8.7% at last week’s parliamentary elections. She spoke to Tina Becker about the election campaign, the merger negotiations between the PDS and the Wahlalternative (WASG) and the possibility of Linkspartei participation in government

The Duke of York syndrome
Where do we go beyond the heights of the latest demonstration - apart from marching back down again? Emily Bransom reports from last week's anti-war demonstration

Crisis in Northern takes new form
The IRA’s decommissioning of arms marks the end of a whole period in Irish history. At such a time it is essential for communists to take stock in order to develop an appropriate response to the new situation. With this in mind Jack Conrad presented a set of draft theses to the September 25 aggregate of CPGB members, which also briefly discussed the document written by Mike Macnair, ‘Ireland’s British problem and the tasks of British communists’. The latter is not intended as a set of counter-theses, but an initial attempt to explore the programmatic aspect of some partial differences

Too tragic to be farce
In spite of the media hype, preparations for Hurricane Rita were just as chaotic and class-based as they were for Katrina, writes Martin Schreader

Smashing!

With over a week to go before the end of our September fund, I am pleased to announce that we have already smashed through our £500 target.

This unexpected success has resulted mainly from one large donation - no less than £240 from our comrades of the Revolutionary Democratic Group. Originally intended for the CPGB’s Summer Offensive, this gift is just as welcome in the autumn!

I can also report a number of smaller, but no less valued contributions which have helped push up our total to a more than useful £610. Special thanks also this week go to comrade GJ for her £30 cheque, PR for the extra tenner to go with his resub and CR, who contributed another £10 via our website.

Talking of which, it does bear repeating that this facility is very much underused - especially when you consider the thousands of readers who regularly look through the Weekly Worker online (over the last seven days there were 14,068 visitors to our website, for example). If each week just five or six comrades did the same as CR, our finances would be on a much firmer footing.

Now that we have passed not only the £500 barrier but £600 too, how about setting our sights on a total of £750 this month? That would go some way to make up for the overall shortfall we have run up so far in 2005.
