Report on the London Group
In London we have made a start on the process of bringing together Marxists
from a range of traditions. Thirty-four have agreed to be on the circulation
list, 32 on the e-list I have set up. Groups represented include the Communist
Party of Great Britain and New Interventions, plus quite a number of currently
non-aligned individuals.
We have held five meetings, taking up the CPGB’s offer of one slot a
month of their weekly seminar series. The meetings have discussed the
kind of party we need, a number of aspects of programme, and questions
around imperialism. We have hosted two debates. These meetings are designed
to explore our differences and areas of agreement as part of a process
of creating an open, democratic and pluralist Marxist party.
The CPGB is re-examining their draft programme at their public Sunday
seminars. This is a further opportunity for comrades to discuss a range
of vital issues.
Future meetings of the London CMP will see Moshe Machover discussing
the politics of the Middle East, and a discussion about Marxism and culture.
The London CMP also provided the largest forces for the CMP intervention
at the national conference of the Campaign for a New Workers’ Party. The
CMP moved a motion on the need for a Marxist party rather than a Labour
Party mark 2 and organised a fringe meeting.
